Responsible for the direction and management of all aspects of membership, including member relations (recruitment, renewals and retention), member engagement, and component relations (Board of Governors, Sections, Specialty Societies), governance, and committees.
Serve as the expert on the Academy’s membership and volunteer leadership development efforts.
Supervise direct reports with overall supervision of Business Unit staff.
Oversee Unit budget and budgeting processes.
Responsible for all revenue budgets related to membership recruitment and retention. Responsible for programs, practices, and processes that generate the AAO-HNS’ revenue from membership dues.
Responsible for collaborating with Communications BU on strategic messaging for membership recruitment, renewals and retention as well as member engagement and recognition. Streamline business processes and optimize organizational effectiveness.
Serve as contributing member of the Executive Leadership Team.
Business Unit Management
Direct the Unit’s planning and goal setting process, and responsibility for relating them to the AAO-HNS’ strategic goals.
Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to Unit staff; including hiring, training, performance management, and professional development opportunities.
Direct and mentor staff in creating and maintaining the Unit’s strategic direction, staff management, business processes, budget, and financial oversight.
Provide oversight of all membership recruitment and retention activities including achieving budgeted goals. Provide planning, direction, and support to Unit staff.
Make presentations about the value of membership and member engagement to staff, committees, and other groups as necessary.
Responsible for developing strategic plan for membership revenue growth including short and long range plans for dues increases.
Track member participation in key areas and appropriately market to members based on value.
Analyze membership trends and work with the Credentials and Membership Committee and the Board of Directors to drive member value for the future.
Utilize internal and external marketing opportunities developed in tandem with the Communications BU to increase membership and revenues.
Provide oversight in monitoring customer service and quality assurance to members.
Develop performance metrics to evaluate member/customer service.
Manage member customer service, solicitation, and cultivation strategies to increase brand awareness and increase membership.
In collaboration with IT, ensure appropriate and effective database management tools and technology systems.
Provide oversight of all component relation activities including the Board of Governors, Women in Otolaryngology Section, Section for Residents and Fellows-in-Training, and Young Physicians Section.
Provide strategic guidance for component/society relations activities, including the AAO-HNS/F Leadership Forum & BOG Spring Meeting.
Governance & Committees
Provide oversight of the activities relating to the Boards of Directors (BOD) and its Executive Committees (EC), including compilation, dissemination, and maintenance of Board/EC reports, agenda books and action items, BOD standards, BOD job descriptions, policies, and bylaws.
Provide oversight of the new member orientation and leadership development programs for BOD members.
Provide oversight of the Academy’s and Foundation’s Committee infrastructure, including but not limited to: applications, appointments, liaison training, and compliance.
Consistently demonstrate adherence to the core values and behavioral standards of the AAO-HNSF, including providing courteous, cooperative, and helpful behavior to all contacts, internal and external.
May participate and/or lead internal or external team(s) and/or committees, either through formal assignment, or on an ad hoc basis. Serve as staff liaison as assigned.
Communicate and participate in senior staff and volunteer leadership activities.
Direct regular Unit staff meetings to ensure active flow of information.
Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally or in writing.
Requires Bachelor’s Degree with 10 years’ experience in association management and at least 5 years’ experience in senior Membership position. A graduate degree in a related field is preferred. Must have extensive knowledge of association organization and operations; be fully familiar with techniques of membership marketing and tracking, survey research, customer/member service, staff leadership, and volunteer management. Requires general understanding and knowledge of today’s healthcare environment, including issues impacting private and academic practice environments, value-based care, and legislative/policy issues. A minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience is required including a strong background in budgeting. Must demonstrate the following skills: strategic thinking, leadership, strong interpersonal relationship skills including excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to work with diverse group of people at all levels of the organization. Some travel required.
