Conceptualizes, develops, and edits content for accreditation manuals, general publications, and/or subscription products for assigned program(s). Ensures content is appropriately written, edited, reviewed, and approved, and publications are accurate, published in a timely manner, and profitable according to department guidelines.
Ensures that content is conceptualized, developed, edited, reviewed, and produced in an accurate and timely manner. This is accomplished through the following duties and responsibilities:
Assists Associate Director in identifying new publications, prepares product proposals, and develops detailed table of contents for new and revised products.
Creates development schedules for all assigned projects and tracks projects from conception through printed/posted products, providing updates to supervisor and other staff as appropriate.
Works with content developers (including freelance writers, expert authors, subject matter experts, surveyors, and publications colleagues) to help cultivate content based on extensive research and information from Joint Commission and industry experts.
Negotiates fair and appropriate fees for content developers. Prepares contracts for supervisor’s review; reviews, approves, and logs freelancers’ bills promptly.
Reviews draft manuscripts to ensure accuracy and conformity with Joint Commission and JCR standards, goals, initiatives, policies, and procedures, and with department style before sending to internal or external review. Conducts quality control checks on manuscripts generated from the standards database to ensure all content appears correctly.
Edits and/or rewrites manuscripts, organizing content in a logical manner and flow, adding material for clarity and completeness, and checking accuracy of statements or passages that could have adverse effects on JCR and Joint Commission.
The level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree in English or journalism.
Minimum of two years of experience in editorial experience in publishing (content and developmental editing), preferably in book publishing. Experience in health care publishing or with updatable looseleaf publications is very helpful.
Excellent verbal and written skills.
Ability to understand and analyze complex material in a wide range of technical areas in health care areas and ensure effective communication of same.
Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Interpersonal skills needed to interact with and elicit cooperation of internal staff and external authors, reviewers, and content experts in developing publications. Ability to resolve disparate point of view or needs relative to publication content.
