AER is seeking an experienced Director of Membership and Brand Development to oversee the creation and implementation of a comprehensive messaging and data strategy to recruit, engage and retain both individual and corporate members. The person will be responsible for developing the AER brand and working to raise funds to support the profession including sponsorships and conference exhibits. The incumbent will work in close partnership with AER Divisions and Chapters, and will play a major role in the strategic oversight and management of the entire membership cycle including: prospect identification and contact; development of strategies to optimize retention; identification and analysis of membership trends; effective oversight and use of the NOAH database to manage member data and processes; effective communication (and reinforcement) of the value proposition of membership; and coordination and collaboration with AER Chapters.
Membership Development Duties:
Develop a comprehensive understanding of AER’s mission, products, services and audience;
Develop and annually assess a comprehensive membership development plan including membership recruitment and retention, engagement strategies and member customer service;
Apply market research, best practices, and industry research to implement innovative recruitment/retention strategies targeted to each member category;
Assess and maintain data integrity to ensure accurate reporting of members and prospects;
Develop policies and standard operating procedures to streamline new member onboarding and renewal processing;
Promote and enforce the highest member service standards possible in responding to inquiries, requests, and comments from members and prospective members;
Generate new leads through independent research, attendance at trade conferences, internal database, and other sources;
Work with staff to create and continually refine a value message for membership;
Recommend new programs, services, and benefits to meet member needs;
Serve as a back up to the Operations Coordinator to input member data and payments; and handle incoming and outgoing member calls.
Serve as staff liaison to the Membership Committee
Brand Development Duties:
Creates compelling materials, letters and other items that channels the developed brand.
Establishes, maintains, and manages a portfolio of current and prospective donors and supporters (foundations, individuals, conference exhibitors and corporate sponsors) to support member services, programs and conferences.
Creates written pieces and follows strategy for established annual fund campaign with compelling branding.
Cultivates relationships with board members, volunteers, and vendors to ensure annual fund materials and messaging reflect the AER brand.
Plan and implement engagement strategies to maximize relationships with existing and new donors and supporters with the capacity to make annual fund gifts as well as sponsorships and exhibits.
10+ years of experience with a professional or trade association developing and implementing membership recruitment and retention programs; and 5+ years experienced with brand management, fundraising or program development.
Demonstrated proficiency with membership databases and systems;
Strong technical skills/competency in e-communication tools and MS Office;
Demonstrated ability to gather, interpret, analyze, and report statistics; and
Strong interpersonal skills to build lasting member relationships;
Initiative, drive, and an entrepreneurial spirit;
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; and
Ability to manage and oversee multiple projects.
Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.
