Melwood is seeking a Director of Development to join our External Affairs team. The successful candidate is a seasoned Fund Development professional with strong fundraising skills and demonstrated experience in building long-term and strategic relationships. Reporting directly to the Vice President External Affairs, the Director will manage the fund development team to realize goals that reflect and support an aggressive strategic growth initiative.
In order to ensure that rapidly growing service demands are met for people with differing abilities, Melwood is seeking a leader to significantly increase and diversify revenue streams, manage donor relationships, develop strategies and oversee execution, and ensure targeted outreach, cultivation and stewardship of donor relationships. An emphasis is placed on growing new funders and funding sources, elevating giving levels among current donors, and increasing annual contributions.
Key Responsibilities include, but not limited to,
Lead and manage a fund development team that significantly increases and diversifies revenue streams (including cash gifts, gifts of stock and deferred gifts, grant, peer-to-peer, online giving, cause related marketing, sponsorships and employee giving, etc.);
Develop and execute strategies to grow the donor pipeline and ensure revenue goals are met by engaging or renewing support from governmental agencies, corporations and businesses, foundations and individuals;
Build on and implement new processes to execute a comprehensive and fully integrated fund development program with a focus on increasing sustainable giving, major gifts, and corporate support;
Create collaborations and partnerships with h federal, state and local government agencies, veteran service organizations, non-profit organization, academic institutions and other stakeholders which can further Melwood’s mission and goals
Develop and track high-level proposals and accurate reports to meet internal and external giving requirements including target/revenue reporting, interim and final reporting, stewardship reporting, narratives and budgets, prospect pipeline status, executive briefings, etc.
Spearhead collaboration with Melwood departments to conceptualize strategies, and prospect and market programs and services to ensure targeted proposals and program driven funding;
Support the Communications division with subject matter research, human interest stories and personal profile for op-eds and other writing projects tied to key marketing and communication campaigns and initiatives.
The position requires a senior-level fundraising professional with the 10 years+ of experience, judgment, skills, and networks, to increase Melwood’s donations, enhance its visibility and increase its relationships and partnerships with donors, including:
A demonstrated track record of success raising funds and developing long-term relationships with civic organizations, foundations and corporations;
A demonstrated track record of securing major gifts and deferred gifts from donors through estate planning and other types of gifts;
Exceptional oral and written communications skills with the ability to develop donor briefings and communicate with diverse personalities in a tactful, professional and positive manner;
Utilizes a strategic approach to fundraising and possesses a strong knowledge of fundraising best practices and of current, and emerging technology fundraising applications and communications;
Knowledge of federal and state funding, veteran benefits, and military is preferred;
Proven ability to think critically, achieve results, manage multiple tasks, adhere to deadlines and work well under pressure both independently and as part of a team;
Innovative and entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to think beyond the traditional;
Leverages internet and social media for fundraising and outreach techniques;
Passion for Melwood mission and ability to inspire and manage staff and volunteers;
Highly developed interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with high net worth individuals and “C-Suite” executives;
Solution-oriented approach to challenges and the ability to work well under pressure, manage multiple projects and deadlines;
Ability to work independently, exercise confidentiality and good judgment;
Willingness and ability to travel up to 40% regionally and 10% of time nationally;
Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Google Apps, and database management systems a plus;
Bachelor’s degree is required. A Master’s Degree or higher is preferred;
Demonstrated familiarity with veteran services arena is preferred.
