The Director of Development is responsible for supporting partnership activities and fundraising by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting corporate and foundation partnership and funding contributions for Family Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), a national nonprofit career and technical student organization located in Reston, VA. This position supports the Executive Director in partnership cultivation, the Conferences Department in securing and cultivating exhibitors, and the Programs Department in assuring partnership commitments are fulfilled. This position requires travel.
Efforts are conducted to increase, maintain, and diversify funding and partnerships that match the mission of FCCLA. Aspects of the development function of the organization are accomplished through development and implementation of an annual Development Plan with specific goals and strategies related to individual donors, corporations, foundations, governmental agencies, and nonprofit organizations. The Development Plan supports the FCCLA Strategic Vision areas related to partnerships and involves various stakeholder groups.
The Director of Development also oversees the work and responsibilities of FCCLA’s Outreach and Professional Development Manager. The Outreach and Professional Development Manager supports the organization with at-risk state outreach and assistance, securing business and industry volunteers for national events, teacher and adviser recruitment through the Say Yes to FCS campaign, Adviser Professional Development planning and implementation, and the development of FCCLA’s Business and Industry Advisory Council.
Identify, cultivate, solicit, and support partnerships that produce financial contributions and services from corporations and foundations in support of the FCCLA’s mission and activities.
KEY SUPPORTING TASKS
Lead the organization in partnership outreach and development;
Research prospective partners to identify matches for the organization;
Solicit exhibitors and funds by “selling FCCLA” to current and prospective partners. This position creates effective, workable partnerships with mutually beneficial goals, and increased funding for FCCLA. Creativity and interpretive judgment are needed to raise funds and build partnerships with appropriate outcomes. Additionally, both oral and written communication skills are essential to effectively tell the FCCLA story and “make the case” to potential donors;
Prepare donor and prospect correspondence as appropriate, including but not limited to, letters of inquiry, proposals, acknowledgement/thank you letters, and reports for in-depth look at funded project accomplishments and activities;
Manage administration of partner benefits and recognition at meetings, on website, and in publications for financial and in-kind contributions;
Work with Executive Director on annual organizational development-related planning, goal setting and strategies;
Work with the Director of Operation to oversee grants, sponsorships and in-kind contributions are earned in the proper time period;
Cultivate scholarship offerings for FCCLA members;
Assist with development of promotional materials; and
Provide clear direction and support based off of organizational and industry knowledge to the Outreach and Professional Development Manager.
Develop and write grants and applications;
Develop individual giving campaign;
Promote and work with donors on planned giving options;
Prepare and conduct potential partner presentations;
Present annual asks or proposals focused on increasing partner commitments and leveraging current partnerships;
Create partnership parameters established through memos of understanding, letters of agreement, and contractual relations;
Work with Communications Department to create/revise the organizational fundraising collateral, writing development-related materials, and recognition of individual donors and partners in publications and at nationally-sponsored meetings;
Secure and cultivate relationships with exhibitors and college expo participants;
Support the Programs Department in oversight of partnership commitments;
Work with national officers to assist with their development roles and responsibilities and serve as a resource for the National Vice President of Development;
Make recommendations for future financial development work and lead new development efforts; and
Manage the Outreach and Professional Development Manager in identifying and executing appropriate next steps for the at-risk states outreach, securing business and industry volunteers for national events, teacher and adviser recruitment through the Say Yes to FCS campaign, Adviser Professional Development planning and implementation, and the development of FCCLA’s Business and Industry Advisory Council.
Create partnerships that benefit the organization financially and are supportive of organizational mission and program offerings;
Identify good matches for grants, research and pursue leads on potential partners;
Meet with potential and current donors, plan/work on funding/implementation strategies, conceptualize framework of partnership and create budget;
Complete applications or proposals including statistical data;
Compose letters of inquiry;
Develop customized informational packets;
Compose Development Reports for Board of Directors;
Maintain and nurture relationships with partners;
Serve as primary contact during creation phase of partnership building. Involve appropriate staff in conference calls and meetings related to partnership creation. Compile project data, oversee documentation of project activities, and report progress based on necessary requirements set up in partnership and current sponsorship guidelines;
Network with external groups to cultivate relationships, gain organizational recognition, obtain support/funding, and provide training;
Coordinate, develop, and administer giving campaign. Work closely with staff liaison to mail house;
Support the development of the Business Advisory Council. Recruit, orient, retain, and engage executives serving as members;
Coordinate with the Finance Team to generate invoices for contributions and sponsorships to allow for better tracking of funds owed and received;
Assist the Finance Team in collecting outstanding balances;
Review and approve materials developed by the Outreach and Professional Development Manager to ensure accuracy and strategic direction;
Assist Outreach and Professional Development Manager with the development of the Business and Industry Advisory Council including timelines, budgets, outreach to potential council members, and annual meeting support.
Bachelor’s degree in appropriate area preferred.
Experience in managing expectations, multiple project timelines, and working within a collaborative team environment.

Additional Salary Information: FCCLA covers 90% of employees medical, dental, and vision insurance, and 60% of their dependents. After one year of service, FCCLA provides a 5% contribution into employees 403B, with an additional 2% match, for a total annual contribution of up to 7%. FCCLA provides the following annual leave: Vacation (13-25 days), Sick (12), Holidays (11), Personal Day (1) and Community Service Day (1).
