The Director of Philanthropy/Grants will advance the work of JourneyCare by identifying, cultivating and soliciting foundation and government grants and implementing and managing direct mail programs in support of priority campaigns and program initiatives. Must be equipped and prepared to articulate the vision, mission and goals of JourneyCare to current and prospective donors. The Director of Philanthropy/Grants works closely with the agency’s Board of Directors and Trustees.
Works with the Foundation President to develop an annual plan of foundation and governments solicitations and to develop and evaluate funding strategies for top prospects and donors
Works with the Foundation President to develop an appeal strategy. The strategy will include the writing of the appeal, creation and management of a production schedule, including a parallel website, social media, and email campaign in tandem with the marketing and communication team member(s).
Plans and implements calls to potential and existing donors, cultivates donors and prepares and delivers tailored proposals based on donor interests
Engages volunteer and executive leadership, program and committee representatives in grant and appeal activities, strategically using partners in cultivation and solicitation efforts
Works closely with administrative, program and finance staff to collect information and develop donor proposals that reflect the current and future operating needs of the agency
Utilizes available tools (Research Point, Wealth Engine) to research prospects and prepare appropriate contact and activity reports for grants
Provides ongoing analysis of results and the development and implementation of the department’s appeal goals. Analyze and report on weekly, monthly and year-to-date performance of the appeal program
Reviews and updates the portfolio as appropriate. Updates strategy and cultivation plans regularly. Meets or exceeds the expected level of donor activity each week and month, i.e., number of face to face visits, asks, calls, personal correspondence, etc.
Attends board, leadership, funder and community meetings and events to further donor relationships and to advance the message of the Foundation
Attends and assists with JourneyCare and JourneyCare Foundation special events, fundraising and non- fundraising
Works with Foundation and Marketing staff to oversee direct mail, donor recognition, publications, special events, and awards and help to plan and participate in donor recognition events
Assists with marketing and public relations publications, mailings and other projects as necessary
Bachelor’s Degree required
Graduate Degree preferred (Public Administration, Business Management, or related field)
Minimum of 3 years of development experience with proven success in securing major gift level foundation and government grants
Demonstrated experience engaging and building relationships with highly rated prospects and donors and ability to communicate the JourneyCare mission and programs in ways that excite and motivate them
Exceptional talent for building and sustaining relationships, both internally and externally, and for driving results
Proven track record generating new revenue or successfully managing strategic partnerships
Excellent written, analytical and verbal, communication skills necessary to tailor messages to various audiences and to be an effective presenter for JourneyCare Foundation
Covers a nine county service area, must be able to travel to meet with prospective donors, including nights and weekends
Computer skills - Word, Excel, Raiser’s Edge, Donor Research Databases, E-mail
Understanding of fundraising law and ethics
Exceptional organizational skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to supervise and motivate volunteers and staff
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and prioritize while working under multiple deadlines
Excellent problem solving and negotiation skills; ability to effectively collect, analyze, organize, distill and present information
Understanding and experience with the stages of partnership development, from qualifying, exploratory conversations, strategic proposal development, negotiations and contracting
