After graduating from dental school and then completing the required two to three years of specialized education in an accredited orthodontic residency program, orthodontists are eligible for membership in the AAO.

The AAO seeks a Director of Human Resources to serve in a key role by shaping and implementing the human resources function. The position is new and will report to the Executive Director. The Director is responsible for all generalist’s activities, including but not limited to: performance management and continuous improvement, professional development and training, compensation and benefits programs, recruitment, and employee relations. The Director will serve as a trusted advisor and expert, consulting and guiding employees on HR policies and procedures, best practices, employment law, and employee-related issues. The successful Director of Human Resources is passionate about customer service, able to provide strong leadership and management skills and is comfortable working in a hands on environment.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Design, implement and oversee competency development and a performance management process.
Assist in the creation of staffing plans integrated with the budgeting process and the effective implementation of those plans through recruitment, selection, placement, professional development and retention of talent.
Manage the oversight and development of benefits and compensation programs; ensure accurate and timely administration of these programs; manage and develop compensation plans to include cost analysis and modeling.
Manage and administer merit increase process; review and recommend salary increases.
Develop and maintain a consistent approach to job evaluation to ensure internally equitable pay practices and compliance with all statutory regulations.
Identify and implement human resource systems and process improvements that streamline procedures and promote efficient and effective HR delivery.
Encourage strong employee relations through open communication, professional conduct, addressing and resolving employee issues, maintaining appropriate confidentiality, and implementation of industry best practices.
Provide guidance to departments and managers on employee relations, performance management, professional development, organizational design and team building.
Oversee internal controls to ensure human resource programs and policies are compliant with state and federal laws and regulations.
Supervise and monitor the required and accurate maintenance of employee personnel files and records.
Respond to employee questions regarding policies and procedures.
Monitor and maintain vendor contracts and relationships.
Assist in projects and reporting as needed.
Education and Experience required
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree or SPHR preferred.
Minimum of 10+ years in Human Resources with a minimum of 5+ years in a senior-level Human Resources Management/Director position.
Broad knowledge and experience in all aspects of human resources including recruitment, employee relations, compensation and benefits, training and development and organizational design.
Demonstrated expertise in examining operations and procedures.
Comfortable working in a “hands on” environment.
Anticipates future needs and opportunities and builds infrastructure to support the organization.
Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of an HR strategy including project prioritization and implementation.
Demonstrated knowledge of compliance and regulatory issues and employee benefits administration.
Demonstrated knowledge of emerging HR and legal trends.
Experience working as part of a cross-functional team.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to demonstrate personal flexibility.
High professional standards regarding customer service, integrity and confidentiality.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Understands the business environment and objectives and can work with employees to meet those objectives.
