Verto Solutions, an established and effective Association Management firm in Washington, DC, is looking for an Executive Director to work closely with the board of directors for its client, the American Spice Trade Association. The Executive Director is responsible for implementing the overall strategic direction of the association and provides leadership and management for ASTA’s day-to-day operations.
The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors for implementation of all areas of responsibility, which include:
Overall Strategic Management
Advise the Board of Directors regarding policy and provide professional advice and direction
Provide leadership to the Board to develop long-term strategic plans that support ASTA’s vision, mission and goals and work with staff on implementation
Provide leadership both internally and externally to develop long-term strategic plans that enhances current business
Keep abreast of developments and changes within the association's industry
Prepare fiscal year budget for approval by the ASTA Board of Directors
Provide financial oversight of annual approved budget, with review of monthly financial statements for accuracy and to ensure revenue and expenses are in line with budget assumptions
Ensure that an annual audit is conducted by a Certified Public Accountant and that tax returns are filed
Ensure the implementation of financial policies as approved by the ASTA Board of Directors
Ensure that all programs are properly staffed to ensure the delivery of first-class customer service
Monitor the ongoing performance level of all administrative staff and provide timely feedback for improving performance and conduct annual performance reviews
Ensure that administrative staff is adhering to ASTA’s Bylaws and policies in its daily activities
Ensure overall staff development and training and deployment of resources, guidance, direction and motivation, with special emphasis on effective team management
Build the association through recruitment of new members and retention of current membership
Manage staff resources to ensure the timely response and handling of all member inquiries
Ensure the accurate and timely processing of all new member applications.
Oversee annual categorical dues form distribution and dues renewal process in accordance with ASTA policy
Oversee member communications, including timely and appropriate dissemination of information and use of available tools. Publish annual report on the ASTA website each spring and provide regular updates on key issues at ASTA events
Monitor media activity via all communication channels (e.g. social media) for impacts to the spice industry and manage media relations including proactive development of statements on key industry issues and response to media inquiries
Represent the association nationally and internationally in accordance with the ASTA Travel Policy on all issues of the association's industry
Oversee coordination and development of strategic plans to implement legislative, regulatory and food safety objectives
Increase visibility of ASTA with federal agencies and on Capitol Hill (as necessary) to ensure ASTA’s public policy positions are represented
Represent ASTA positions to US regulatory bodies and U.S. non-governmental organizations, and provide assistance to allied associations in their work with foreign regulatory bodies and other non-government bodies as appropriate
Represent ASTA and industry positions at Codex Alimentarius meetings
Oversee development of education and resources to ensure industry has understanding of regulations and tools for compliance
Provide oversight of consultants providing legal and technical services to ASTA, ensuring assigned projects are completed on time and within budget
Coordinate all activities with Director of Meetings to ensure successful events
Provide oversight for all aspects of ASTA member events, logistical support, registration, financial management, vendor contracts, etc.
Board and Committee Oversight
Communication and coordination with the Executive Committee on new developments
Ensure appropriate staffing for ASTA committees to facilitate their work to achieve ASTA’s strategic goals
At least eight years in a leadership position at a trade association; food-related preferred.
Experience serving as an advocate and spokesperson on food and/or related issue.
Proven track record of strategic leadership.
Experience with food and/or related regulatory issues.
Experience presenting to international audiences.
Outstanding verbal, written and speaking skills.
Financial/budget management experience for non-profit organizations.
