AIChE is a professional society of more than 60,000 chemical engineers in 110 countries. Its members work in corporations, universities and government, using their knowledge of chemical processes to develop safe and useful products for the benefit of society. Through its varied programs, AIChE continues to be a focal point for information exchange on the frontiers of chemical engineering research in such areas as energy, sustainability, biological and environmental engineering, nanotechnology, and chemical plant safety and security.
The Engineering Associate has strong written and verbal communication skills, project management skills, and problem solving skills. As the face of AIChE to volunteers and our undergraduate student members and vice versa, it is important to be able to effectively communicate both within the organization and with members. Project management skills are crucial for staying organized and keeping the department’s many programs and initiatives on track throughout the year. The ability to identify problems and thoughtfully resolve them is critical to supporting AIChE’s continued growth. The top priorities for this role are to retain and grow student membership and to guide, develop, and support essential functions related to undergraduate student membership and Student Chapter programs.
Under the direction of the Manager, Early Career Membership, the Engineering Associate will achieve the following objectives:
Support and guide essential functions related to undergraduate student membership and Student Chapter, including conferences and events, in conjunction with Membership Department teammates and various other stakeholders
Coordinate technical student competition and award programs, such as the AIChE Chem-E-Car Competition® and Student Design Competition
Monitor program results and share necessary program updates, reports and data as needed
Track revenue and expenditures to meet budgeted P&L goals
Coordinate communications and marketing, including but not limited to student membership acquisition, renewal, benefits and conferences; develop and edit communication pieces including web, written, public speaking and presentations
Engage student program volunteer leadership as staff liaison; develop relationships, correspond with and provide support to program volunteer leadership (includes Student Chapter presidents and advisors, Student Chapter Committee (SCC), and other student program committees as delegated, and coordinate matching of volunteer opportunities with people interested in volunteering Grow Student Chapter program; outreach to potential new student chapter leaders; correspond with external and internal stakeholders; facilitate understanding of student chapter program guidelines and student membership benefits; onboard new student chapters
Video conferencing skills (Zoom meetings, Zoom webinars)
Experience using the Web
Well-versed with community discussion platforms and database applications
Excellent oral and written communication
Strong presentation and interpersonal skills
High attention to detail
Manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Education & Work Experience Requirements
Minimum BS degree in Chemical Engineering or related field
Minimum 3-4 years of project management experience required
Marketing experience is a plus
Association experience and/or prior experience with volunteer organizations a plus
Location & Travel
The position is remote, but individual must reside within the NY, NJ, CT or PA. Travel is required: up to 30% domestic and international – this includes travel to conferences throughout the year and 2-3 visits per year to the AIChE Global Office in NYC.
