Director – Governance and Special Projects
Are you thinking about making a change in your career for 2025? Are you seeking a new and exciting challenge in governance and special projects? AO North America, Inc. (AO NA), a nonprofit continuing medical education organization, is searching for its very first Director of Governance and Special projects. This position reports to the Executive Director and serves as AO NA’s governance and project planning expert, leading governance activities and special programs to align with strategic objectives and ensure compliance. This role supports AO NA’s governance structure and leaders, including the Board of Directors (BoD) and Executive Council (EC), to drive organizational effectiveness.
The Director will liaise with and coach staff overseeing clinical division boards, committees, and working groups to enhance cohesion across leadership teams. This role will be involved with strategic planning, project management, and volunteer leadership meetings, supporting a rewarding volunteer experience within AO NA.
Do you have an interest in:
Serving as the primary staff liaison to the BoD and the EC including creating, managing, and archiving agendas, minutes, summaries, board materials, and communications.
Collaborating with the Chair, President, and Executive Director to identify leadership trait gaps and develop methods to fill them.
Leading and managing all aspects of the BoD and CDs’ nominating committees and elections, including related communications and announcements.
Developing, implementing, and regularly updating governance policies and procedures to ensure compliance with nonprofit standards and best practices; interpret and resolve issues.
Leading the management of the leadership portal.
Drafting and leading volunteer leadership training and development, including onboard presentations, manuals, and offboard evaluations; creating and directing an annual volunteer assessment and communications program.
Developing and implementing a communications stream for volunteers – from recruitment to offboarding.
Overseeing and ensuring the accuracy of database updates, reflecting changes from elections and appointments and directing related communications and acknowledgments.
Partnering with the Executive Director and Chief Learning & Strategy Officer to develop, manage, and evaluate the strategic plan; monitor and report the progress of all departments.
Leading the development of the annual leadership roundtable and expert meetings.
Partnering with the Marketing Director to develop and distribute AO NA’s annual report.

Is AO NA remote or what?
AO NA operates in a results-only- work-environment and allows for a distributed workforce. While mostly remote, we do believe that collaborating in person from time to time is important, We are in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. The Director will travel to AO NA Board meetings (currently twice a year at the main office, once a year at OneAO-the annual flagship meeting, the annual employee retreat, as well as participate in occasional course site meetings and events.
The ideal candidate will work in the Eastern time zone. This position has the ability to work a four-day compressed work week or a five-day work week. Employees have the ability to flex their normal work hours to accommodate surgeon schedules because of evening and weekend meetings.

We need someone who has:
Integrity, diplomacy, and credibility with leaders, members, vendors, and staff
The ability to maintain confidentiality.
The ability to create volunteer and staff relationships while serving as a trusted point of contact.
The desire to be a self-starting collaborator with excellent interpersonal/communication (written and verbal) skills and strong problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to produce deliverables on time and within budget through keen project management.
Budget projection/cost control knowledge.
An interest in working on various projects with varying scopes, challenges, timelines, and budgets.
Prior demonstrated experience in governance
